Matt Wilson, named 2018’s Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, is a drummer and composer beloved by audiences, critics, and a seemingly endless list of premier contemporary musicians. In addition to his extraordinary instrumental skills, Wilson receives constant praise for being a bandleader and creative force who pushes both sidemen and genre boundaries alike, while remaining remarkably accessible in every context. Tonight’s performance will feature music from his recent album Honey and Salt, named 2018 Record of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. The album pays homage to poet Carl Sandberg through a series of songs inspired by and featuring Sandberg’s poetry. Neither the spoken word nor the music ever feels like an intrusion on the other, and that the outcome feels so organic speaks volumes of Wilson’s gifts as a composer. This is a special and unusually successful integration of artistic mediums. Across Wilson’s many projects, the simple element that elevates his performances (and you’d be hard pressed to find a concert or record review that doesn’t mention this) is his obvious and unadulterated joy in playing this music.
