Pianist McCoy Tyner and saxophonist Charles McPherson are both true living legends, each of them 80 years old, and they’re here to prove that jazz keeps you young. Tonight they join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis to play brand-new big band arrangements of their iconic compositions—all written exclusively for this event by members of the JLCO. The Orchestra members are longtime fans of these jazz giants, and the excitement will be palpable as they share the stage to perform inspired new versions of their favorite songs.
Charles McPherson is a singular bebop saxophonist. After playing with Charles Mingus for over a decade, McPherson has been traveling all over the world as a renowned leader and mentor. He remains one of the few musicians able to channel the classic bebop might of predecessors like Charlie Parker, but he possesses a powerful style of his own as both a composer and soloist. Audiences will witness both sides of that talent tonight....
