On September 29th, vocalist/composer Aubrey Johnson and violinist/composer Lisanne Tremblay will each present their unique compositions and ensembles at the Cornelia Street Café at 8:30 and 10 PM, respectively. One of the leading contemporary voices of her generation, Johnson recently recorded her debut album for Inner Circle Music, and incorporates jazz improvisation, Brazilian music, and wordless vocal compositions in her musical palette. Her band includes Alex Goodman on guitar, Michael Sachs on woodwinds, Matthew Sheens on piano, Matt Aranoff on bass, and Jeremy Noller on drums. Having recently relocated from Canada to New York City, Tremblay is a noted violinist who has made waves re-thinking the violin’s role in an improvising context, as evidenced on her first Inner Circle release, Violinization. Her concert will feature Liberty Ellman on guitar, Carlo De Rosa on bass, and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums. The Café charges a $10 cover and $15 minimum per person, which entitles attendees access to both sets.
On September 30th at 8 PM, pianist/composer Jason Yeager, whose recent Inner Circle release United (with violinist Jason Anick) received a 4.5-star review in Downbeat, will present new original compositions inspired by the writing of Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller at Manhattan’s the cell theatre (338 West 23rd Street, Manhattan) along with a septet of superb musicians. The band includes fellow Inner Circle artist Yuhan Su on vibraphone, Noah Halpern on trumpet, Lucas Pino on tenor saxophone/bass clarinet/flute, Peter Nelson on trombone, Kevin Hailey on bass, and Reggie Quinerly on drums.
