Grammy Award-nominated trumpeter and composer Russell Gunn – probably best known for the musical fusions presented in his Ethnomusicology series – has recently presented his “Blackhawk Revisited” project to several enthusiastic audiences around the country, showcasing the classic tunes Davis performed at the Blackhawk in 1961. Tonight, his already excellent quintet includes NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Cobb, the long-term Miles Davis drummer who played in the original Blackhawk sets. Gunn’s trumpet playing and his group are worth checking out on any occasion, but it’s especially exciting to witness this music performed by a multigenerational band with an original participant 55 years after it originally won the hearts of jazz lovers.
