2015 marks the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane’s iconic recording, Ascension. Along with Ornette Coleman’s 1960 double quartet album, Free Jazz, Ascension was a landmark in collective free improvisation, and it signaled a new phase of development in the music of John Coltrane. For many listeners in 1965, the energy and ferocity of Ascension was a shock and a departure from anything previously heard in Coltrane’s work.
To commemorate the anniversary of Ascension, Michael Eaton (saxophone) and Adam Minkoff (bass) will convene a special 14 piece large ensemble at Shape Shifter Lab featuring some of NYC’s top improvisers. Join them at Shapeshifter Lab on June 8, 2015 at 7pm as they resurrect and reimagine John Coltrane's Ascension....
