Nothing pianist and composer Vijay Iyer does is ever conventional, whether it’s a deviously skewed version of “Human Nature” by Michael Jackson or a burst of South Indian rhythms over a swung bass. The prodigiously talented[1] player and 2013 MacArthur fellow comes to BAM to perform a program of three works representing his auspicious career to date: the world premiere of a solo piece for piano, commissioned by BAM; his recent suite Mutations I-X for piano, electronics, and string quartet; and his shimmering score to Prashant Bhargava’s film Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi[2], an ecstatic descent into the streets of India during the titular Hindu festival, screened with accompaniment by Iyer and the International Contemporary Ensemble.
