“Textures and Pulsations” (Ictus Records, 2012) is a multilayered sonic meeting between two gifted and imaginative pianist/composers, Aruan Ortiz and Bob Gluck. With two pianos and poignantly etched live electronics, this pair crafts a mélange of subtly shifting textures, lyrical melodies, and engaging grooves. This collection of carefully articulated, highly virtuosic improvisations is a study in contrast, offering moments of subtlety and power. Musical moods range from wild flights of pianistic fantasy to placid landscapes of sonic color, each delightfully expansive and rich in detail. A palpable chemistry melds the individual skills and intelligence of these musicians, rewarding the listener with constant surprises. “Textures and Pulsations” offers music that will engage a wide variety of listeners, from lovers of abstraction and musical adventure, to those who appreciate a great, syncopated beat.

Aruán Ortiz, “the latest Cuban wunderkind to arrive in the United States” (BET Jazz), hit the ground running when he came on the American jazz scene in 2003. A classically trained violist and pianist, this Santiago de Cuba native’s sound is as marked by the influence of the contemporary classical composers such as Schoenberg, Ravel, and Copland as by traditional Afro Cuban sounds and jazz greats Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Thelonious Monk. Of his recording Alameda, John Murph (Down Beat) wrote: “Ortiz concocts an exhilarating program of modern jazz, characterized by sharp, angular melodies, probing improvisations and rhythmic pulsations that betray interests in broken-beat and drm-’n'-bass as they do post-bop and free-bop.” His jazz career took off as a sideman in Barcelona and Paris, and later in the U.S. with Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Terri Lyne Carrington, Greg Osby, Cindy Blackman, Esperanza Spalding, Gary Thomas, Wayne Krantz, Rasheed Ali, Stefon Harris, and others. His work as a composer includes chamber music, music for contemporary dance, and other settings. For more information: http://www.aruanortiz.net
Bob Gluck is a pianist, composer, writer, and Associate Professor of Music at the University at Albany. He has released three recordings of music for jazz trio and three of electronic music. Karl Ackerman (All About Jazz) wrote about his work: “As a composer and player, Gluck ranks with the likes of Andrew Hill and Cecil Taylor.” His most recent recording “Returning” was described by Jazz Review as displaying “an intensity and sensitivity that is spellbinding.” Gluck studied music at the Julliard, Manhattan and Crane schools of music, the University at Albany, and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Interactive Electronic Arts program (iEar). He is author of “You’ll Know When You Get There: Herbie Hancock and the Mwandishi Band” (University of Chicago Press, 2012). Gluck’s collaborators, this year, have included Michael Bisio, Jane Ira Bloom, David Darling, Joe Giardullo, Aruan Ortiz, Neil Rolnick, and Dean Sharp.
