Hush Money*: A collective formed not long ago by John McNeil, a trumpeter of dry wit and lyrical concision, and Jeremy Udden, a saxophonist of fluid introspection, Hush Money otherwise features new original music, and the responsive young rhythm team of Aryeh Kobrinsky on bass and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums. (Nate Chinen – New York Times)
Sara Serpa presents her new project ”Crossing Oceans”, an exploration of the hidden roots of Portugal’s celebrated singing tradition while reviving its African and Brazilian origins as well as chronicling her own personal journey that first lead her to dismiss and then embrace the songs of her country.

Vocalist-composer-bandleader Sara Serpa is “the magical voice” according to pianist Ran Blake, who knows a thing or two about singers. Her unadorned, vibratoless delivery has been described as “smooth as glass” and her ability to sing complex vocalese lines on an equal footing with instrumentalists marks her as one of the most innovative singers of recent years. Praised by All About Jazz as “the freshest vocalist on the scene at the moment,” the 33-year-old Serpa has risen from the Hot Clube Jazz of her native Lisbon to New York’s Village Vanguard in a surprisingly short time. After coming to the world’s attention as a member of Greg Osby’s group in 2008, and further establishing her credentials in duet with pianist Ran Blake on Camera Obscura, as well as with pianist Danilo Perez, in his most recent release Providencia, Serpa now sets off firmly on her own journey as a leader.
