post-minimalist composer virgil moorefield brings his genre-bending group and intermedia work to new york city!
performing moorefield’s new works for miniature orchestra will be bang on a can pianist vicky chow, the redoubtable percussionist ian ding, as well as dither’s taylor levine (electric guitar); up-and-coming swiss jazz player jürg wickihalder on baritone sax, noted berlin percussionist martin lorenz , and poland’s exuberant new music contrabassist aleksander gabrys.
“the music i’ve written the last couple of years treats the ensemble as one large instrument: a drum set. writing what i know, i’m having a good time and the work just feels right. i’m also unexpectedly accessing an orchestral feel with a small group– it’s a kind of transatlantic pocket orchestra.”
the ShapeShifter Lab performance also features the intermedia extravaganza five ideas about the relation of sight and sound, a large-scale visual music/synesthesia piece that generates visuals and surround sound treatments on the fly from live performances on acoustic instruments. featuring robert alexander and devin kerr, techno-artistic contributors.
