About
Out of Your Head is both a collective of improvising musicians in Brooklyn as well as a regular performance event at Freddy's Bar and Backroom. Bassist Adam Hopkins, originally from Baltimore, founded the NY chapter in January 2012 to help expand and unify the local creative music scene. OOYH currently involves over 75 NY-based musicians and some of the finest improvisers in the world, including Tony Malaby and Gerald Cleaver. For every performance Hopkins hand picks a group of musicians from the collective to perform two sets of improvised music—forming groups that have never rehearsed nor played together. The music is created in the moment then gone, and by a group of people who may not even know each other before the first note is played. Currently the collective will appear the first and third Sundays of each month at Freddy's Bar and Backroom, and will be two sets starting at 9:30pm and at no cover charge.
