About
Trombonist Jen Baker and vocalist Kyoko Kitamura have been working together for over a year, composing for two single line instruments: the trombone and the voice. The lack of a chordal instrument was a challenge and a source of inspiration. They experimented with different sound combinations, interweaving their experiences working in theater and with dancers, grounded in their common foundation as improvisers. The result is a two-woman show that is part theater, part art music, and always spontaneous.
A versatile trombonist and a fearless improviser, Jen Baker is a regular member of the Bang on a Can's Asphalt Orchestra. She has recently performed with Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins) at Alice Tully Hall, and with Pauline Oliveros and Stuart Dempster (Deep Listening Band) at EMPAC. She has performed/recorded with Fred Frith, Cecil Taylor, William Winant, Joelle Leandre, Kyoko Kitamura, and Damon Smith. http://www.baker7jenz.com/home.html
Kyoko Kitamura is a vocal improviser, composer, and an occasional pianist who has performed and/or recorded with many distinguished musicians including Anthony Braxton, Reggie Workman, Jay Clayton, Steve Coleman, Jim Staley, and Taylor Ho Bynum. Mostly recently, she opened Vision Festival 2012 at Roulette, and can be heard on Anthony Braxton's opera "Trillium E" (New Braxton House 2011) as well as on her first solo release "Armadillo In Sunset Park" (KK 2012). http://kyokokitamura.com
